Kremlin Calls for Stability in Mali After Deadly Sahel Attacks
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told journalists during a briefing that Russia views a return to stability as a priority.
“We believe that it is important that everything in the country returns to a peaceful, stable course as soon as possible,” he said.
When asked about the role of Russian forces operating in the region, Peskov said the matter falls under the responsibility of Russia’s defense authorities, directing further questions to them.
The comments came after coordinated attacks were reported over the weekend across several locations in Mali, including the capital, involving armed groups operating in the Sahel region.
Among them were militant factions linked to al-Qaeda and a Tuareg-led rebel coalition.
Authorities in Mali later confirmed the death of Defense Minister Sadio Camara, stating that he was killed during an attack targeting his residence in Kati, a military town near Bamako.
According to official accounts, the strike involved a vehicle-borne explosive device followed by an armed assault.
Reports indicated that Camara attempted to resist the attackers before being critically wounded and later dying in hospital.
